DRAWINGS

Here, I would like to reshape your definition of the word ‘drawing.’ While you might see pencil illustrations on paper, what you are actually looking at are invitations to escape to new places. Spaces that we can construct together. To draw is to bring people together. To draw is to go on a journey. It is to pull curtains, blinds, or other such coverings open. To draw is to use your life experience and your skills to open up windows and doors into more colorful environs.

A drawing is a spell, a conjuring, a mission statement. The images below depict ideas inspired by conversations with communities in Spain, England, India, Japan, Kenya, South Africa, Afghanistan, Colombia, and the United States. The ideas became drawings, the drawings became civic action, and in turn the civic action became a monument to the people that we are. I call these ‘Living Sculptures’ and each one is a manifestation of human values across politics, ethnicity, religion, and language. To draw is to gently pull or guide someone in a specified direction. To draw is to extract from imagination and insert into reality. I firmly believe everyone can do it.
